On June 2nd, Shaoyang News Network reported that in the modern agriculture demonstration park of Hunan Xuefeng Seed Industry Co., Ltd., a company responsible for cultivating and planting new varieties of fruits and vegetables, an agricultural technician named Liu Yang was conducting sugar content tests on a new variety of watermelon called Huangtianyu. To his surprise, the sugar content in the center of the watermelon was found to be 13 degrees, making it very sweet. Upon hearing this news, a senior agronomist named Yang Hongbo from the same company who was watching nearby, became ecstatic and invited everyone to taste the sweet watermelon. The new variety of watermelon, known as Huangtianyu with a small yellow flesh, is part of a series of yellow-fleshed small watermelon cultivars developed by Hunan Xuefeng Seed Industry Co., Ltd. in 2020. This series of cultivars is characterized by high sugar content, strong resistance, diverse types, hard outer skin, and easy transport. So far, the company has developed a total of 13 new varieties of the yellow-fleshed small watermelon cultivars, including Huangxiaoyu, and Orange Jade.
Last year, the company successfully conducted a trial planting of this new variety, and this year, it established five demonstration bases with an area of over 100 mu in modern agriculture demonstration parks in Daxiang District, Banqiao Township, Shaodong, and Dongkou, where it carried out demonstration planting and promotion. "We will soon transform scientific and technological achievements into productivity, expand the cultivation in Shaoyang on a large scale, promote the increase of farmers' income, and contribute to the revitalization of rural areas," said Yang Hongbo.
